Wendell's Clam Chowder

In the center of North Falmouth on Cape Cod for many years was situated an old beloved shack called Wendell's Cafe. It sort of looked like a dining car and most customers sat at the counter. The food was very good and I always saw the same customers eating there, the many hundred's of times I ate lunch there. It was a family run cafe with Wendell and his mom doing most the cooking. All of my cousins worked there as counter persons at one time or another. My uncle Bill's house was on the same main road. Not only did it have good food , It occasionally had entertainment when the pots and pans used to fly in the open kitchen which was right behind the counter. Once, Wendell's mom hit him in the face with a whole pie because she was in a huff.
Wendell's made a very good chowder that you could eat every day because it was not super thick and loaded with butter and cream. They used just milk and butter. They would make it every couple of days, the same way. Canned clams, diced potatoes, diced onions and clam broth. Cooked until the clams were tender and added milk and butter to finish it off. It was a very popular item for the local natives and also the wash ashores. Unfortunately, it had a bad fire and was sold and worst of all Wendell died recently. he is sorely missed by all who knew him or ate at the diner.
